The January presenters are Daren Bascome and Peter Herman.
Tickets will be available Monday, January 23rd, starting at 7:00 AM.

These two gentlemen know a lot about a great cup of coffee (and origami). Peter Herman and Daren Bascome are creators of the Compleat cup, an ingenious disposable coffee cup that doesn’t need a plastic lid. They’ll share with us insights about product design, how an architect’s idea was brought to life by a designer, and their mission to entice folks to ditch sippy cups (and that extra plastic) and instead “fill, fold and drink.”

Peter Herman, AIA, is an architect by trade for the last 25 years, with a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and the responsible use of materials. He currently works at Ellenzweig, an architectural firm based in Cambridge.

Daren Bascome is founder of Proverb, an award-winning global brand-building agency in Boston, and has been named as “one of the most sought-after designers in Boston” by the Boston Globe. A former director of the Massachusetts College of Art Foundation Board, he is currently an overseer of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Meeting space is generously provided by Space With a Soul, a shared workspace for non-profits. The goal of Space with a Soul is to help organizations allocate more time and money to mission, rather than operations. They achieve that goal by providing shared office space, developing shared services, and engaging companies with a track record of work with the nonprofit community to provide affordable services to their nonprofits. Space with a Soul calls what they do “Mission Acceleration”.

Design Museum Boston board member Michael DiTullo was recently quoted saying, “Design is a positive reaction to dissatisfaction.” Design has the power to make our everyday lives more comfortable, more efficient, more exciting, and more rewarding. Since 2009, Design Museum Boston has worked to promote the role of designers and give public voice to the design industry as a whole. Through exhibits, events, and partnerships, Design Museum Boston provides the creative economy with opportunities to collaborate, educate, and support our collective work.

We’re asking for your help so we can continue these important programs. A year-end donation in any amount will directly support exciting and essential new programs in 2012.
Make your tax-deductible donation today.

Every donation counts! This past year, we made some exciting strides thanks to the support of friends like you. In 2011, we:

Opened our most recent exhibit, Retail: Retell, Recycle, Rethink at the Prudential in Boston’s Back Bay to rave reviews;

Acquired low-cost office space at Space with a Soul in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood;

Built relationships with design firms, designers, and artists across New England

Were accepted into Catchafire’s founding Boston class of nonprofits. Catchafire is a great organization that pairs nonprofits with professionals looking to use their skills for social good;

and we received a $50,000 planning grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for the purpose of strengthening the connection between the art, design, and business communities in Boston’s Innovation District.

You’ve had a hand in making these important programs become reality. Please help us jumpstart our 2012 programs with a year-end donation. We can’t do it without you! Here are just a few ways your donation will have an impact in 2012:

Your support will help fund our next major exhibit, Beyond the Logo, opening in Summer 2012. The new exhibit highlights successful New England brand design projects and explores the creative process behind what makes a brand memorable. We’re opening at a very exciting location.

You’ll help us continue our immensely popular Unite events and Creative Mornings breakfast events, offering designers and non-designers alike an opportunity to connect, socialize, and inspire each other. We need your help to continue to make these events possible!

We’ll be able to complete our collaboration with smallbean, an inspiring Boston-based nonprofit teaches technology skills around the world. Through a partnership with Samsonite, we’ve developed a prototype solar energy system for powering smallbean’s rural computer labs.

We wish you and your colleagues a happy and prosperous year. Thank you for making a contribution to Design Museum Boston part of your year-end giving.

To make your tax-deductible donation click here.
Thank you.

Sincerely,

- The Design Museum Boston Team

Local artists and designers visited the new Design Museum Boston office at Space with a Soul for our latest UNITE event on Friday, November 18th. Co-hosted by Fort Point Arts Community (FPAC) and the Design Industry Group of Massachusetts (DIGMA), attendees filled Space with a Soul’s event space overlooking Fort Point Channel and Back Bay.

This particular UNITE event marked the public kickoff of the Our Town grant program, a partnership between Design Museum Boston, DIGMA, MassArt, and the City of Boston. With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the program aims to elevate the presence and use of design in the development of the South Boston Waterfront.

With drinks provided by Harpoon Brewery and M.S. Walker, attendees mixed and mingled throughout the night. The delicious food from our new neighbor, Channel Cafe, was provided by Massachusetts College of Art & Design.

Karen Stein, board member for FPAC, began the evening’s presentation with a welcome message and introduction of FPAC. Throughout the night images of FPAC members’ artwork scrolled on the projector screen. Anne Marie Stein introduced DIGMA and their mission to raise the profile of Massachusetts as a worldwide leader in design. Derek Cascio, DMB Co-Founder, then introduced the museum and spoke about upcoming programs and events. He was followed by Co-Founder, Sam Aquillano, who outlined goals for Our Town including using design as a planning process, a cultural amplifier, and an economic driver. He mentioned the next step in the program will be to hold town hall meetings with residents and businesses to discuss upcoming projects.

Design Museum Boston is run by volunteers and our volunteers did an amazing job making people feel at home and facilitating a great time for all. Stay tuned for our next UNITE event coming in early 2012.

Realization

A lot of work has brought the design team to this point but until now it’s been predominantly research and concept development. This 3rd workshop is where the rubber hit the road and ideas start becoming reality.

Between the second and third workshops a significant amount of refinement was done to the concepts, simplifying them and redesigning elements to better suit Smallbean and NTC’s requirements. Both the rental battery bags and laptop case underwent significant changes to accommodate easier travel, setup, and maintenance.

Ultimately, the team reviewed the refined designs and consolidated features even further. This was possible due in large part to the selection of a battery and the donation of laptops by the programs newest sponsor, MSi. This allowed for the design team to work around specific components thus driving the size and shape of the battery bags and laptop case. In the end, 2 cases each holding 16 rechargeable batteries would make up the ESCARGO portion of they system while a wheeled, carry-able, case holding 10 laptops would be used for Smallbean and NTC’s educational programming.

In parallel, electrical engineer Michael Datta worked to develop the charge controller electronics needed to facilitate charging the systems’ batteries. As always, cost is a major factor in the development of any design, be them mechanical or electrical and the charge controller is potentially a major cost adder. Thankfully, Mike was able to work out an electrical design that is not only low cost, but fully capable of handling all of the use case scenarios that Smallbean and NTC could encounter.

With finished design concepts in hand the design team, Sean, Ross and Andreas, a developer with NTC, went to visit Samsonite to share their ideas. Jason Gifford and Bill King of the Samsonite design team were excited to see what the team came up with and quickly started discussing where certain elements needed to be improved and how they could add bits here, take things away there and potentially utilize parts from existing Samsonite product. The design team even brought with them a sketch model for scale. This proved to be a great conversation piece for both teams to talk around especially concerning transportation and housing of the units. This was all good information for Andreas to keep in mind as he would be heading out to Tanzania shortly to begin construction on the Launch Pad.

All of this discussion led to a trip to Samsonite’s prototyping and testing labs. The design team was blown away by the amount of material and hardware options available to them. A good portion of the day was spent examining different types of handles and fabrics. Jason and Bill were more than happy to share how Samsonite products get made and tested solidifying the fact that the Designing A Difference prototypes were in good hands.

The day ended and the team left excited to see the prototypes and what their vision would look like in reality. Stay tuned for the next phase of Designing A Difference and a first look at the prototypes!
