Getting There: Design for Travel in the Modern Age Opens at Grand Circle Gallery in Boston

May 1, 2012 (Boston, MA) — Grand Circle Gallery and Design Museum Boston jointly present Getting There: Design for Travel in the Modern Age, an exhibition that explores how design shapes and transforms the experience of traveling by ship, train, and plane. Presented by Samsonite, the exhibition will run from May 11 through September 1, 2012 at Grand Circle Gallery, 347 Congress Street, Boston.

Getting There will compare the past, present, and future of travel by showcasing images, artifacts, and the design process. Set against the backdrop of Grand Circle Gallery’s collection of vintage travel posters, Getting There will track the ever evolving experience of travel. The exhibition will look back on the jet setting days of the early 1900s, consider the contemporary traveler’s experience in a deregulated travel industry, and offer some exciting glimpses into future travel possibilities.

The displays will chronicle the design evolution of traveler accessories, such as noise-canceling headsets, as well as designs of airline seats, train interiors, and vintage cutlery. Drawings, models, and prototypes from design firms such as Bose, Samsonite, Teague, and IDEO, will highlight projects that have creatively addressed design challenges posed by the constraints of human travel.

“We are really excited about this intriguing show,” said Grand Circle Gallery Director Mark Schianca. “By exploring Getting There, we hope that visitors will question what constitutes a ‘golden age’ of travel: was it truly an era gone by? Is it now? Or is it an era yet to come?”

Sam Aquillano, Director of Design Museum Boston, added, “We hope that this exhibition will encourage people to consider how design shapes not only our travel experiences but also all other aspects of our world.”

Grand Circle Gallery’s new and expanded summer hours are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday noon to 6:00pm and Thursday noon to 7:00pm, as well as by appointment. Admission is FREE and the gallery is handicap accessible. For more information, please visit www.gct.com/grandcirclegallery or call 617-346-6459.

Allana Taranto, Ben Spear and Jon Lopkin have been working alongside one another and collaborating on project work for over a year. In addition to shooting wedding, portrait and boudoir photography (Ars Magna Studio, arsmagnastudio.com), Allana is an accomplished speaker on visual thinking. Ben has been a brand consultant for over ten years, and counts some of Boston’s most prestigious cultural institutions among his clients (Thinkside, thinkside.com). Jon owns a strategic graphic design boutique for forward thinking leaders (amusegrafik, amusegrafik.com). Their unique partnership has culminated in a project about the unique benefits that space-sharing confers on the passionate creative, called One Big Open.

This talk is their first engagement for the One Big Open initiative, which will culminate in a three-month-long pop-up coworking space. In it they’ll define the coworking movement and share their successes: expanding beyond your industry, fueling passion, producing programming, creating community and raising your profile. This is a new approach to business for a changed economy—learn how you can use it to grow professionally and spiritually.
Breakfast is generously sponsored by Captains of Industry. Founded by filmmakers, the Captains pioneered the use of entertaining video to help brands come alive on the web and attract the right customers. Today, much of our work still lives outside the realm of the traditional media plan, freeing our clients to try new things and jump on opportunities. What sets us apart? In a word, content. Whether we’re making a full-boat integrated campaign, or a targeted social media push, we put creative content at the center.
We’re pleased to announce Barismo will be the official coffee sponsor of CreativeMornings Boston. Barismo is a local small batch roaster based in Arlington, Massashusetts. Our approach to coffee is simple in concept: fresh sourcing, fresh roast, fresh grind, and fresh brew. This approach requires a transparent conversation between barismo, its producers, and all of our customers about quality.
This month’s gracious host is: Space with a Soul. Meeting space is generously provided by Space With a Soul, a shared workspace for non-profits. The goal of Space with a Soul is to help organizations allocate more time and money to mission, rather than operations. They achieve that goal by providing shared office space, developing shared services, and engaging companies with a track record of work with the nonprofit community to provide affordable services to their nonprofits. Space with a Soul calls what they do “Mission Acceleration”.

Excitement was in the air high above the waterfront at Design Museum Boston’s latest UNITE event. The breathtaking views, provided by MassChallenge, were a fitting backdrop to the big ideas presented during the evening. Co-hosted by ONEin3 Boston, the night marked the first event in their Engagement Economics series, which is focused on bringing together practitioners, policy makers and citizens across neighborhoods and disciplines to examine the connection between civic health and economic development in Boston.

The crowd mingled and chatted while enjoying delicious food by Boloco and drinks courtesy of Harpoon and MS Walker. For the main event we had a panel of experts to discuss the importance of art and design on the community: Heidi Burbidge, Senior Project Manager of the Boston Redevelopment Authority; Ricardo Barreto, Director of The Urban Arts Institute; James Grace, Executive Director of the Arts & Business Council; John Harthorne, Founder and CEO of MassChallenge; and last, but not least, our own Derek Cascio, Co-Founder & Director of Design Museum Boston. It was great to see so many organizations working to integrate art and design into our everyday lives and striving to make Boston a hub of creativity and innovation.

Design Museum Boston is grateful for the sponsorship of Gerding Edlen, Boloco, Harpoon, MS Walker, and Ben Gebo Photography. The event couldn’t have happened without the support of our co-hosts, volunteers, and attendees. Thank you to all who attended and stay tuned for the next event in our UNITE series.
This is a very special UNITE event and marks the first event in ONEin3 Boston’s Engagement Economics series. We are proud to partner with them as they work to bring together practitioners, policy makers and citizens across neighborhoods and disciplines to examine the connection between civic health and economic development in Boston. The evening will consist of food, friends and a panel discussion with representatives from The Arts and Business Council, The Urban Arts Institute, The Boston Open Studios Coalition, The Boston Redevelopment Authority, MassChallenge and Design Museum Boston.

MassChallenge is easy to get to, located right off of the Silver Line at the Courthouse Station stop or just a short walk from South Station, so come and learn all about these great organizations, what they’re doing and how we can work together to help our community thrive!

Our March presenter is Ted Page, Principal, Creative Director, Captains of Industry.
Free tickets will be available Monday, March 19th, starting at 7:00 AM.

Most companies attempt to build their internal cultures using dry mission statements and core values posted on walls by the water cooler, but the end result is often the usual soul crushing hierarchy and dumbed-down, “safe” work. Captains of Industry, a creative shop in Boston, took a different approach – a Manifesto that brings together ideas and designs that embody what it means to be a Captain. In this session, Captains of Industry co-founder and creative director, Ted Page, provides a guided tour of key aspects of the Manifesto that have helped form the company’s unique culture and philosophy. The talk will be an excellent excuse for anyone seeking to get out of their office for a few hours, have a decent breakfast away from their keyboard, and remove their shoes (recommended but not required. See disclaimer for details. Offer not valid in all time zones. Talk with your doctor before taking in combination with other medications).

Designing a Creative Culture – The Manifesto.
(i.e., how to build a company culture where you do great work, have fun, and ditch the shoes)

Ted Page has more than 25 years of experience creating strategy-driven work that clients are proud of. Ted co-founded Captains of Industry in the late 90’s with a leading Boston-area filmmaker, Fred Surr, and went on to pioneer new ways to draw customers’ to client websites with video storytelling. Ted has created memorable work – from ad campaigns and websites to print literature and video – for a wide range of clients around the world, including Starbucks, Nike, KEMA, EnerNoc, SolidWorks and First Wind. Today, Page leads the creative development process at COI, helping to ensure that clients are provided with outstanding work that delivers measurable results. His musings can be followed on the Captains’ Blog.
